Garrett Optical Center has been the choice for many of the areas most prominent and discriminating residents.

The Garrett Optical Center stocks a wide variety of top-of-the line designer frames. Our experienced optician provides individual attention to each patient and works diligently to find just the right frame to suit your unique personality and style. At the Garrett Optical Center, orders go through stringent quality checks using state-of-the-art laboratories to provide you the best possible vision, comfort and style.

Lens Styles

  • Single Vision: Correction for one focal distance only ( i.e. close, intermediate or far ) or correction for astigmatism
  • Progressive Lenses: Progressive Lenses: Correction for near (reading), intermediate (television) and distance vision without distracting lines on the lenses.
  • Flat Top Bifocals: Flat Top Bifocals: Lenses that are split into two segments. The top is for distance only and the bottom is for near only.
  • Executive Bifocals: Lenses that are split into two segments with a line extending the whole width of the lens. One segment for distance and the other for near.
  • Trifocal: Trifocal Lenses: Lenses that have three segments: One for distance, one for intermediate and one for near.
  • Specialty and Occupational: We offer any style of lenses to accommodate any visual needs, i.e. sports eye wear and computer uses, safety eyewear that meets ANSI standards

Lens Material

  • Plastic: Basic lens material that provides good optical quality, ultraviolet protection, and scratch resistance. These lenses can also be tinted to any color.
  • Hi-Index: Premium Lens material that provides excellent optical quality, ultraviolet protection, scratch resistance, and can be tinted to any color. Premium lens is also thinner and lighter weight than plastic.
  • Polycarbonate: Premium lens that provides excellent optical quality, thinner style lens, ultraviolet protection, scratch resistant and can be tinted to any color. This lens it the lightest and most impact resistant available.
  • Glass: Basic lens material that provides superior optics and is scratch resistant but also has many disadvantages. It is the heaviest in weight, thickest and has inferior impact resistance.

Lens Options

  • Photochromatic Lenses: Lenses that adjust their color to outdoor and indoor light conditions. They darken outdoors and lighten indoors. Theses lenses provide scratch and ultraviolet protection and are available in gray, brown, and green tints.
  • Anti-Reflective Coating: Special clear lens coating that is applied to lenses to reduce glare and enhance visual clarity. This coating reduces the brightness of sunlight and during the day and the glare of oncoming headlights in night time traffic. It also reduces eye fatigue from computer screens and enhances your appearance by reducing reflections on the lens surfaces.
  • Polarized Lenses: Sunglass lenses that are the best for reducing bright sunlight glare and produce excellent outdoor contrast. These lenses have less than half the glare of standard tinted lenses and come with scratch resistant coating and ultraviolet protection.
  • Lens Tinting: This option is can be done to most lens materials and comes in an array of colors. It helps reduce glare from light and enhances appearance by reducing reflections.
  • Mirror Coating: This coating is applied to sunglasses and adds an extra protection from sun glare. This coating makes lenses look like a mirror and comes in a variety of colors.

John Michael Garrett M.D. graduated from Indiana University School of Medicine in 1973. After completing a 2-year Internship and Internal Medicine Residency at the University of South Florida in Tampa, Dr. Garrett completed a 3 year residency in Ophthalmology at the Medical College of Georgia, in Augusta. He followed this with a fellowship in microsurgery, including Phaco-emulsification cataract removal and corneal transplant techniques under Richard Schulze M.D., in Savannah, Georgia. Upon completion, he began an Ophthalmology practice here in Iron Mountain, opening in January 1979.

Ambulatory Surgical Center

Garrett Eye Center’s Ambulatory Surgical Center opened in 1987, and is the first and only ambulatory surgical center in the area. Over 1,000 surgeries are performed per year in the surgical center. We have a certified anesthesiologist on site. The surgical center offers convenient, cost effective treatment with a well-trained staff, specializing in ophthalmology.

Glaucoma Treatments (SLT)

It is estimated that almost three million Americans have glaucoma. Half of these people are not aware that they have the disease. It is important to make an appointment with Dr. Garrett for a comprehensive eye examination to determine if you could be at risk for Glaucoma. Dr Garrett specializes in SLT laser treatment. SLT is a therapy that uses a special laser to reduce the pressure in the eye. It is usually painless, and the treatment takes a few minutes.

Diabetic Retinopathy

Diabetes is a condition in which the body’s ability to process and store sugar has been impaired. Diabetes is a leading cause of blindness in the United States. People with untreated diabetes are said to be 25 times more at a risk for blindness than the general population. This is why it is important to schedule an appointment with Dr. Garrett for a diabetic eye examination if you believe you may be at risk for Diabetic Retinopathy.
