Refractive Surgery Procedures

Laser procedures use an Excimer Laser to shape the cornea. The Excimer laser is a cold, chemical laser that vaporizes tissue, one cell at a time, without damaging surrounding tissue. How it is applied is described below.

Custom Vue-VISX & Custom Vue Individualized Laser Vision Correction
Custom Vue Individualized Laser Vision Correction is an individualized laser vision correction procedure that is Wavescan-driven. This enables Dr. Garrett to measure and correct imperfections that are unique to each individuals vision that could not have been measured before. It is performed surgically the same as LASIK.

LASIK- Laser Assisted InSitu Keratomileusis - Laser Assisted InSitu Keratomileusis combines use of an automated corneal shaper known as a microkeratome with Excimer laser to reduce myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness) and, if necessary, astigmatism. A flap of corneal tissue is laid back and the laser is applied to the bed to reduce the steepness of the cornea. The flap is then laid back into place and adheres without sutures.

LRI - Limbal Relaxing Incisions - Limbal Relaxing Incisions treat low to mild astigmatism.  The cornea of patients who have astigmatism appears shaped like a "football".  During this procedure Dr. Garrett makes cuts in the limbus (very edge of the cornea) which allows the cornea to relax and become more rounded to it's natural state as the cornea heals.  LRI is one of several refractive procedures and is usually done in combination with another surgery such as cataract surgery.
