YAG Laser Capsulotomy
In
some patients who have cataract surgery, the membrane (capsule) into
which the artificial lens is placed will cloud over time, causing a
socalled "after cataract", or posterior capsular opacification.
When this occurs, symptoms are similar to a developing cataract and
the vision gradually fades. Dr. Garrett uses a YAG laser with
a powerful beam to create an opening in the cloudy membrane in an
instantaneous and painless manner. This procedure, called
posterior capsulotomy, takes only a few minutes and vision is
ordinarily restored within a day.
After the procedure is completed, patients are currently required to
return in 3-4 weeks for a quick check of
vision,
pressure, and capsulotomy results. There are no restrictions on activities. The
majority of patients enjoy improved vision almost immediately. The
rest experience gradual improvement over the next several days.
