Frequently Asked Questions About LASIK
1. Where is surgery done?
Refractive surgery is done at Garrett Eye Center's Ambulatory
Surgery Center in Iron Mountain, MI. The laser comes to our center
each month with it's own certified technician who assures proper
treatment equal to a fixed laser.
2. Will I be hospitalized?
No. This surgery is done safely as an outpatient. You will be at the
center approximately 2-3 hours and then may return home.
3. How about my activities after surgery?
In most cases, with the techniques we use, it is possible for the
patient to return to normal activities when they return home.
Swimming, tanning, and sauna use are restricted for a 2 week period.
Eye makeup Is restricted for 1 week after surgery. This is done to
help prevent infection. There are antibiotic eye drops used after
surgery. We like to have the eye protected at bedtime with an eye
shield you will be given for 2 weeks. You may need to use artificial
tears for several months after surgery.
4. When can I wash my hair?
This can be done with care anytime after surgery provided you are
careful to keep soap and water out of the eye as best as possible.
5. Will I have any pain?
Very rarely is it necessary for our patients to take any pain
medication after they go home. Drops are used prior to and during
surgery to numb the eye. It is normal to have a foreign body
sensation, like something is in the eye after surgery, You will need
to use artificial tears when the eye feels dry, itchy, or scratchy.
6. Will I still need to wear glasses after surgery?
Anyone over the age of 40 will most likely need reading glasses as
LASIK does not correct the normal aging process of the eye. Some
patients may also still need glasses for night driving or other
visual needs. Dr. Garrett will discuss this with you in more detail
at the pre-operative visit.
